1976 Trans Am in Black

The black Trans Am might be the most important color offered in the Trans Am lineup ever. The black Trans Am was made famous in 1977's Smokey and the Bandit. However, many people do not know that there were always two types of black Trans Ams from 1976 to 1981. The Smokey and the Bandit car was a special edition complete with maximum gold pin striping and German lettering for the graphics. The standard black Trans Am came sans the striping and with gold/yellow decals rather than gold matte like the Special Editions.

The offering of a standard black Trans Am )meaning non-Limited Edition) was not documented in factory literature from 1976. This leads to believe that the standard black Trans Am was a mid year offering. This particularly nice example is very clean and optioned with the venerable 455 cubic inch engine, the last of 455's for Firebird's. The HO designation is actually incorrect for 1976 but is correct for a 455 1975 Trans Am. The HO designation was dropped for 1976 even though the engine was essentially unchanged from 1975.

A 1976 Trans Am in non-Limited Edition black is a rare sight anywhere. This one has a contrasting Firethorn custom interior (a nice touch), and front console delete. The honeycomb wheels were also an extra cost option that year.
