The Canopy top continued into 1978 covering half the roof. Sales continued to decline by 55% versus 1977 as vinyl tops fell out of favor with younger buyers. Vinyl top sales would continue to decline until the option was terminated after 1979.

The Skybird was carried over for part of the 1978 model year. The Skybird again wore it's specific Lombard Blue paint with Dark Blue lower accent. The sail panel, trunklid or spoiler, if equipped was adorned by a blue bird in a pin-stripe style design. Thin blue striping separated the upper and lower two tone colrs and also repeated on the hood. The front grilles were acccented with blue highlights and blue snowflake wheels were distinct features of the Skybird.

The Redbird Special Edition, based on the Firebird Esprit, replaced the Skybird mid year. Everything blue on the Skybird was turned to gold on the Redbird. Clad in Mayan Red upper paint with a darker red lower accent named "Redbird Red." This lower color was not available on any other model. The two colors were sperated with gold striping and a distinct, gold Redbird graphic on the sail panels and rear trunk lid or spoiler if so equipped.

The Formula W50 Appearance Package continued for 1978 with few changes. Color choices remain at six with the lighter Glacier Blue being Replaced by the darker Martinique Blue. When you ordered a Cameo White Formula with W50 the two tone bottom color was changed to gold with gold striping instead of black with blue. The W50 Formula Appearance Package carried over the striping around the lower body, blacked out rear taillamp surround and partial bumper, striping on the lower edge of the spoiler, and the smaller 7.22" Spoiler bird with FORMULA decals on the fenders and the standard rear spoiler. The smaller bird was designed to accomodate the wide stripe on the spoiler. Missing on all models for 1978 was the model identication decal on the top of the fascia on the driver's side.
