Option W68: Redbird Appearance Package

1979 Esprit Redbird
The Redbird Special Edition, based on the Firebird Esprit, was continued for 1979. Once again the Redbird featured the Mayan Red upper with a darker red lower accent named "Redbird Red." This lower color was not available on any other model. The two colors were sperated with gold striping and a distinct, gold Redbird graphic on the sail panels and trunk or spoiler if so equipped. Although the package was identical to 1978 the lower two tone and striping was adapted top fit the new front and real bumper treatments.

U87: Firebird Formula

1979 Firebird Formula
New for 1979, all Formulas were painted in two tone colors with the W50 still vailable to add the large FORMULA script on the lower doors. Instead of black or gold lower colors were changed to Charcoal, Blue, or Brown. Buyers could not mix and match colors on Formula models. The standard Formula had small Formula decal IDs within the border stripes on the front fender and a new bird graphic on the spoiler (same as Firebird and Esprit). The W50 added large FORMULA lettering on the door bottoms and new large FORMULA lettering on the spoiler.
The FORMULA door decals were altered very slightly this year from the 1976 to 1978 style. You may notice the the FORMULA lettering is completely vertical versus the slightly slanted font of 76 to 78. The change eliminated the need to have separate right and left door decals. Select a button below to view the color and graphics scheme (Standard or W50) to view color combinations. In prior years Pontiac assigned graphics based on the color of the car but in 1979 you could order and color combinations of graphic and color you wanted. If you wanted colors that didn't match that was okay too by specifying option D60: Color and Incompatibility Trim Override (see below).

Option D60: Color and Trim Incompatibility Override

If the dealer checked Option D60 on the order form you were freed from the contraints of having to order color combinations that the Pontiac designers felt were unattractive. This included not only colors and graphics but interior colors as well. With so many Firebirds rolling off the assembly line in 1979 many people chose to make their Firebird or Trans Am unique by ordering a non-recommended color. In terms of graphics the combinations defined by Pontiac stylists are listed below.
Graphics Recommended Exterior colors
11 Cameo White, 19 Starlight Black, 29 Nocturne Blue, 50 Solar Gold, 69 Heritage Brown
11 Cameo White, 16 Platinum, 19 Starlight Black, 75 Mayan Red
11 Cameo White, 16 Platinum, 19 Starlight Black, 24 Atlantis Blue, 29 Nocturne Blue
11 Cameo White, 16 Platinum, 19 Starlight Black, Sundance Yellow, 75 Mayan Red
Some buyers were quite bold with the D60 Option while others were more subtle

Coordinated Color Combinations

Pontiac stylists had some thoughts on color combinations of exterior colors, graphics, and interior colors and published them in the 1979 Pontiac Dealer Merchandiser. These recommendations are reproducced here. Remember that by specifying option D60 you could order any color combinations you wanted (except Formula two tones and stripes), so this is not a listing of factory correct colors.
