The Chickanalyzer, Trans Am Bird Decals

The 1973 Brewster Green Trans Am had the distiction of being the only green Trans Am available throughout the second generation Firebird run. The public purportedly was tired of green cars because it reminded them of the Vietnam war that was ongoing at the time. Brwseter Green was not a very hot seller in 1973 so this is a rare car.

Another hood bird was introduced in 1975 for Silver cars and would be available on all silver cars until 1978. In 1977 and 1978 this was also the optional bird for white cars. This bird was also recommended for black cars (non-LE) in 1976 when the gold birds were found to be defective.

Used on Yellow, Red, and Maroon cars in 1976 to 1978, and non Limited Edited Black cars in 1976 for a time. At some point the factory began installing birds with black feathers. We can suppose that the clear feathers caused the black underlying paint to look cloudy.

Available on Black, non Special Edition Cars. Note the only difference between this and 527047 is that the feathers are filled in black. This decal is incorrect for non-black cars in 1977 and 1978 and may be correct for 1976 Trans Ams..

Black and Gold Limited Edition of 1976 and Special Editions from 1977 to 1978

This decal is very similar to the 1973 to 1975 decal but it was revived for 1978 on Martinique Blue trans Ams only. Since this was the only time a blue decal was used on a medium blue car it is believed that the shades of blue are just slightly lighter than the '73 version. A new five color Trans Am bird became available on Solar Gold Trans Ams in 1978 and standard with the Y88 Gold Special Edition. In 1979 this decal was continued and available with all colors. It was also standard on the 1979 Black Special Edition

A new four color blue design with gold accents was availble on Trans Ams in 1979 and 1980 available with all colors.

The new charcoal bird was available in 1979 and 1980 Trans Ams in all colors.

Oversize Argent/Silver bird used exclusively on 1979 Tenth Anniversary Trans Ams. Note that the wings extend to the fenders with two wing tip decals. This is the largest bird ever offered on a Trans Am

The Gold hood decal was updated in 1980 (non-Turbo) Trans Ams with darker shades. This decal was also standard with the black and gold special edition. Note, this bird is darker in color than the 1978/1979 version.

Bronze bid used on 1980 non-Turbo cars. Designed for use with the Fiero Bronze body color this decal could be specified for any Trans Am in 1980.

This red hood bird replaced Orange for 1980.

Burgundy hood bird (non-Turbo) for use with Burgundy cars. It could have been ordered on any color.

Gold bird used on 1980 Turbo Trans Ams, including the Black and Gold Special Editions. Note that the flame coming out of the birds mouth was a separate decal running up the off center Turbo hood.

Bronze bird used on 1980 Turbo Trans Ams designed for use with Fiero Bronze body color. This decal could have been ordered on other colors as well.

The blue bird from 1979 to 1980 was reengineered to fit around the new off-center Turbo Hood scoop.

With the same colors as the red non-Turbo hood bird this one fit around a Turbo scoop with separate flames.

Burgundy Turbo Trans Am bird for 1980. Designed for use with Montreaux Maroon Turbo cars this could be ordered with any color.

Essentially the same as the regular argent hood bird of 79-80 but modified to fit the Turbo hood.

1980 Indianapolis Pace Car decal. This decal is very nearly idenatical 1980 Argent/Silver Turbo design. However, this bird had its own part number. Striping decals was installed on top of this decal to integrate the two tone paint around the hood and fenders.

First Design Gold bird used on 1981 (non-Turbo) Trans Ams, including the black and gold special editions. This bird is lighter in color that the Second Design bird for 1981 and was replaced by the darker gold after introduction. This decal did not show well on gold metallic cars.

Second Design Gold bird used on 1981 (non-Turbo) Trans Ams, including the black and gold special editions. This bird is darker in color that the First Design bird for 1981 that it replaced.

Charcoal/Silver non-Turbo bird for 1981. This decal has metallic flakes in it and appears to be almost black when viewed on white cars.

First Design Orange designed for use on Orange Metallic and Yellow-Orange Trans Ams (non-Turbo). This design was replaced after introduction with the second design orange.

Second Design Orange for use on Orange Metallic and Yellow-Orange Trans Ams (non-Turbo). This design replaced the first design orange.

In addition to Orange (specified for orannge cars but not limited to them) this decal offered even more variety.

Two shades of blue made the 81 hood bird a bit more muted.
